OPTIMISM results discussed at final conference on 16th September 2013

The OPTIMISM project held its final conference on Monday 16th September 2013 at Universitaire Stichting in Brussels, Belgium for some 80 experts from universities, research institutes and associations, as well as project members and other key stakeholders. The event featured a welcome and overview of the project by Project Coordinator, Sunil Maher, and Project Officer, Ioana Adamescu, as well as two lively panel sessions with each time four experts from the policy, research and academic world and two of the Work Package leaders. Moderated by journalist Terry Martin, the sessions included presentations from each of the speakers, followed by a discussion.

The first panel session, entitled “Strategies, Technologies and Methodologies for Sustainable Mobility“, featured Wanda Debauche of the Belgian Road Research Centre, Belgium who talked about Sustainable Mobility. Sylvain Haon, Secretary General of the POLIS network, Belgium, presented Implementing innovation in urban and regional transport to achieve policy objectives and he was followed by Mr Chris Reeves, of MIRA Ltd who presented The Green Wave!. Finally, Supply Chain Opportunities & Challenges in transport technologies was the subject of the presentation by David Wright of Coventry University. Martin Redelbach of DLR, leader of Work Package 2 and Arno Shroten of CE Delft (Work Package 3) joined the panel for the questions and discussions after the presentations.

Michael Cramer, MEP of the Greens/European Free Alliance party, gave a very engaging and informative keynote speech entitled Transport and climate change: what the EU needs to do, which attracted many questions and comments. He was followed by an open space session consisting of four posters manned by the OPTIMISM partners who explained their work and findings to the audience who circulated freely (see the posters at

The second panel session in the afternoon, “Future perspectives on sustainable mobility“, included ITS in the ecosystem of the future city by Susan Grant-Muller of the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds, Staring into the future: room for OPTIMISM? by David Morris of Coventry University, Moving towards the livable city of the future by Francesc Robusté, Transportation Civil Engineering School and CENIT, Technical University of Catalonia – Barcelona, and To a successful integration of public transport operators and road operators by Joaquim Cavalheiro, President of AMTP, Portugal. David Morris then led the conclusions of the conference with the help of the Work Package leaders. This time, Merja Hoppe of Zurich University of Applied Sciences (Work Package 4) and Mert Kompil, Joint Research Centre (JRC) European Commission (Work Package 5) joined the panel.

OPTIMISM dissemination and exploitation strategy now published

The dissemination and exploitation strategy for the OPTIMISM project has been submitted as deliverable D6.2 to the European Commission. This deliverable gives an overview of the Results/actions to be exploited, the dissemination target groups and key dissemination and implementation activities such as presentation materials, the newsletter, website and related social media, events and publications.
